7 outdoor activities for Your RRG trip

“I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief… For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”

We love our time outside (duh, right?) and as we come into spring and summer, it’s certain that more folks are going to want to get out into the Gorge and explore!

We have some amazing opportunities, both on and off-site, to take advantage of that amazing weather and get a dose of Vitamin D in RRG:

  1. Hang out the Dappled Light tree net! Also called a “Wooded Web”, these nets are hand-woven between the trunks of trees by our friend Jordan Byrnes. They’re the perfect way to let out your inner child - comfortable for people of any age to bounce, play, stargaze, or relax in, and they offer a lovely pop of color to “Glamp Island I” (our central hangout spot).

  2. Hike! This one seems really obvious, but you’d be surprised how fast a trip can go by without your boots even hitting the dirt.
Whether it’s exploring the waterfall and other natural features on Dappled Light’s 50 acres or venturing out into RRG to hike some of the best trails in the country, we recommend taking a bit of time to walk in the woods this season!

  3. Kayak… Underground! You’ve probably heard of them by now, but if this is your first time in the area you have to check out The Gorge Underground. Our friends over there have taken a 100-year-old flooded limestone mine shaft (that stays at a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and created all kinds of interesting tours, including paddle boarding and LED-illuminated clear kayaks!
    Check them out here: www.gorgeunderground.com

  4. Ride the Skylift! If you can’t take a long hike, or don’t feel like moving your legs that much, you can always take the Skylift up to Natural Bridge. It’s a great way to experience one of the most iconic views in RRG without all the effort. Plus it’s such a fun, unique ride!
The Skylift is seasonal, so we recommend checking to make sure they’re open before visiting: naturalbridgeskyliftandgiftshop.com

  5. Disc golf at Redpoint BBQ! This is one we just found out about, but Redpoint BBQ has a disc golf course right out back. They’re only 7 minutes from the front gate at Dappled Light and are an amazing place to eat and toss a few discs.
Check out RedPoint’s website here: www.redpointbbq.com

  6. Sit near a campfire! It’s simple, but something humans have been doing since… well since we discovered how to make fire. We’ve found that a campfire offers space for deeply satisfying conversations/meditations and that some of the most honest, impactful bonding can happen around a dancing flame. There’s truly nothing like it.

Here’s a quote we read recently:

"I have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing – their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling – their inner lives. They speak subjectively, they argue less, there are longer pauses. To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall, but not if I switch on the lights – then I start thinking about projects, deadlines, demands, and the shadows and shapes of the house become objects, not suggestions, things that need to done, not a background to thought."

  7. Zip through the canopy! Looking for something even more thrilling? Ziplining over some of the Gorge’s most beautiful views is an incredible way to get the family outside! This’ll get your adrenaline pumping, give you views that take your breath away, and create stories for you and your loved ones to share for years to come!

There’s nothing like being out of the city and closer to nature!

If you want a taste of the outdoors this spring or summer, don’t wait! Check out the rest of our website and snag a spot on our 50 acres for one of your most unique getaways this year.
