For the forest! Kentucky business organizes their first volunteer cleanup day in Daniel Boone National Forest
BEATTYVILLE, KY. – APRIL 5th, 2024 – Excitement and spirits were high in early April as volunteers rolled into Dappled Light, a glamping (glamorous camping) retreat center set on 50 private acres of National Forest, right outside of Red River Gorge, KY. The volunteer cleanup was a three-day event spearheaded by Michael Mattingly, the DL property manager. “From over 50 bags of garbage, a lost count of tires, and skeletal remains of what was assumed to be a coyote at one point…. to ancient bottles, a large propane tank, creepy dolls, and a toilet. Clean-up day at Dappled Light was a success!”, he shared.
In exchange for a free weekend away, 16 volunteers showed up to give back to the forest and the earth, embodying the spirit of the spring season and helping refresh the forest that's given so much to us. Izaac, founder and owner of Dappled Light says, "When we became stewards of this land 20 years ago, we realized that the previous owner had been burying his trash around the property. We've done a lot of cleanup over the years, but every season we find more hidden trash. The fight for our forest continues!"
Throughout the weekend, they collectively picked up over 50 bags of trash, found some buried treasures (like a creepy baby doll and some cool jars), and spent time celebrating their hard work while communing around the campfire! "We know this is the first of many volunteer days to come," says Izaac, "we've seen this need in our forest and community for a long time now. We're so happy to be in a position to give back, and honored that so many of our guests want to get in on the action!"
