Camping isn’t just for summertime – Kentucky business encourages guests to consider the joys of winter glamping

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. – DECEMBER 1, 2022 – Not far from Red River Gorge, Ky., on 50 acres of family-owned land within Daniel Boone National Forest, Kevin and Izaac Rains are on a mission to rest, recharge and re-engage those who may find themselves worn down by life’s daily grind. Built upon three values – rejuvenation, hospitality, and wonder – the father-son duo opened Dappled Light (DL) in 2021 to welcome guests to experience the joy of the great outdoors.

“For over 15 years, we’ve joyously ridden, adventured, and hiked these 50 acres, letting no one but family and close friends visit,” Kevin said. “This land has been a haven for us; a place where we can simplify our daily rhythms.”

The Rains want others to experience what it means to cut away the variables that lead to distraction to be fully present with the people and things right in front of them. Dappled Light offers six affordable luxury rentals that are “uniquely designed to make getting outside easy, approachable and rejuvenating,” something Kevin said is part of the unique appeal of a stay at DL.

“One of our core values as a family business is hospitality and creating warm, welcoming spaces for individuals, couples, families, friends, and business associates to be rejuvenated,” he said. “We also are trying to fight the trend that makes camping complicated, expensive, etc. Sometimes there seems to be a subtle message out there that you have to buy lots of expensive gear and plan elaborate trips for weeks on end. What we do is get everything set up so people can just show up and start to enjoy the outdoors with maximum comfort and minimal effort.”

Each of the luxuriously decorated, heavy-duty canvas tents sit on raised platforms to allow for guests to fully enjoy the picturesque cliff edge, valley, and sunset views. All the sites are furnished with a queen-size bed, high-quality mattress, modern seating area, fireplace, full-size porch, and charcoal grills.

And the fun shouldn’t stop when the weather turns chilly. The Rains don’t want the winter months to prevent people from considering a rejuvenating getaway or retreat. In fact, cold-weather glamping can offer some unique experiences that the summer months can’t.

“There are so many reasons to consider the joys of winter camping and glamping,” Kevin said. “Summertime in the outdoors can have its downfalls, but a cold-weather getaway means no bugs, less sweating, cozy fires, snowball fights, warm snuggles, opportunities for hiking, and, of course, stew and hot chocolate season.”

Dappled Light even offers a custom retreat experience for businesses, coaches, churches, families, and individuals who want to take it all in without the hassle of planning,

“We offer curated group experiences to slow down and reconnect while getting access to every aspect of our property,” Kevin said. “Our curated group experiences are led by competent guides who have years of leading others and loads of outdoor experience. We are professionally trained life and business coaches, and, in some cases, even licensed therapists trained to work with groups.”

There is plenty to experience nearby, including the Natural Bridge, Turtle Back Arch, Auxier Ridge Loop, Chimney Top Rock, and Hidden Arch trails, all with uninhibited views thanks during the winter months, as well as horseback riding, kayaking and ziplining, and lots of establishments for enjoying a good meal.
